Why You Shouldn’t Cross A Picket Line

On Tuesday 3rd of December, university staff across the UK will be going on strike. This decision has been taken by the 3 main unions in higher education – Unite, Unison & UCU. They are demanding fairer pay in higher education.

Since 2008, university staff have seen a 13% pay cut, as their wages have not risen with inflation. There is a gendered pay gap, with male academics significantly out-earning their female counterparts. Non-academic staff are often not paid the living wage, which currently stands at £7.65. These are serious issues, which need to be addressed. The government is refusing to implement these changes. The trade unions have been left with one option; to go on strike.
