Machiavelli, Game of Thrones, Red Wedding, Stupid Starks, Stupid Robb…

June 6, 2013 § 4 Comments

So there’s this internet meme, Stupid Ned Stark. Then Season Three Episode Nine, “Red Wedding,” which was screened this week in the UK, has led some people on the internet to suggest Robb Stark is pretty stupid too.

I just read Marcus Schulzke’s article “Playing the Game of Thrones: Some lessons from Machiavelli” (available on Scribd here).

In an appraisal that covers many of the main characters in the books/TV series, Schulzke suggests that neither Ned or Robb Stark is stupid, but both make some massive mistakes in playing the game of thrones. Both could have benefited from reading Machiavelli’s The Prince.

I still prefer the perspective I see behind Cloud Atlas to that behind Game of Thrones. The way I see it, that doesn’t make me naive or dreaming. It just positions me closer to the logic of affinity and further from the logic of hegemony.
